Many emergency vet visits start in the kitchen. Foods that are perfectly safe for people can cause serious illness in dogs and cats, sometimes in surprisingly small amounts.

Knowing the most common culprits — and what to do if your pet eats one — can make a real difference.

The big ones

Chocolate — especially dark and baking chocolate, which contain more theobromine
Grapes, raisins, sultanas, and currants — linked to kidney failure in dogs; no known safe amount
Xylitol — a sweetener in some sugar-free gums, sweets, and peanut butters; highly toxic to dogs
Onions, garlic, leeks, and chives — raw, cooked, or powdered; can damage red blood cells
Alcohol and raw yeast dough
Macadamia nuts (dogs)
Caffeine — coffee, tea, and energy drinks

Cats are especially sensitive to

Lilies are among the most dangerous plants for cats — all parts, including pollen and vase water, can cause kidney failure. Cats are also sensitive to many human medications, including paracetamol (acetaminophen), and to essential oils.

If your pet eats something dangerous

Act quickly. Call your vet or an animal poison-control line right away, with the product, amount, and your pet's weight if possible. Do not try to make your pet vomit unless a vet tells you to — it can cause more harm in some cases.

Prevention

Keep bins secured, store medications and sweets out of reach, and remind guests not to share food. Counter-surfing dogs are best managed by keeping counters clear.
