Dogs communicate constantly through posture, ears, eyes, mouth, and tail. Most bites happen after a series of subtle warning signs that people missed or ignored.

Learning to read those signs helps you understand your own dog better and keep children and visitors safe.

A relaxed dog

Loose, wiggly body; soft eyes; mouth slightly open; ears in a natural position; tail at a neutral height with a relaxed wag.

Early stress signals

These subtle signs often come first:

Lip licking or yawning out of context
Turning the head away or avoiding eye contact
"Whale eye" — the whites of the eyes showing
Lifting a front paw
Sudden sniffing of the ground or scratching

Escalating signs

Stiffening or freezing, a closed mouth, a tucked tail, ears pinned back, a low growl, or lifting the lip. At this stage, calmly give the dog space. Never punish a growl — it is a warning, and punishing it can teach a dog to skip the warning next time.

The wagging tail myth

A tail wag means a dog is emotionally aroused, not necessarily happy. A high, stiff, fast wag can signal tension. Always read the whole body, not just the tail.
