Pets cannot tell us when something is wrong, and many — cats especially — instinctively hide pain and illness. By the time a problem is obvious, it may already be serious.

Knowing which signs are genuine emergencies helps you act quickly when it matters, and avoid worrying unnecessarily when it does not. When in doubt, always phone your vet: they would much rather hear from you early.

Call a vet immediately

Contact your vet or an emergency clinic straight away if your pet shows any of these:

Difficulty breathing, choking, or blue or very pale gums
Collapse, seizures, or sudden weakness
A swollen, hard belly with retching that brings nothing up (a sign of bloat in dogs)
Straining to urinate with little or no urine — especially urgent in male cats
Suspected poisoning, even if your pet seems fine
Heavy bleeding, major injuries, or being hit by a car
Signs of heatstroke: heavy panting, drooling, confusion

See a vet within a day

These problems need prompt attention, usually the same or next day:

Vomiting or diarrhoea lasting more than a day, or containing blood
Not eating for more than a day (cats) or two days (dogs)
Limping that does not improve within a day
Eye injuries, squinting, or a cloudy eye
Sudden changes in drinking or urination

Book a routine appointment

Gradual changes are still worth checking, even if they are not urgent: slow weight gain or loss, bad breath, lumps and bumps, reduced activity, and changes in coat quality. Many diseases are easier to treat when caught early.

Why cats are tricky

Cats are experts at hiding illness. Subtle changes — hiding more, grooming less, sitting hunched, or using the litter box differently — may be the only warning signs. Trust your instincts; you know your cat's normal behaviour best.

Be prepared

Save your vet's phone number and the nearest out-of-hours emergency clinic in your phone. Keep a note of your pet's medicines, weight, and medical history, and know how you would get there quickly at night.
